Frequently Asked Questions
Below are questions and answers that we anticipate our families will have as we embark upon this project. Please consider sharing other questions with us at alinch@cbsd.org so that we can consider sharing the answers here in order to benefit the larger Butler community. We will add to this page as the project continues.
When will the modulars be installed?
During the March 28 meeting of the Board of School Directors, the Board approved a contract for design services with Phillips & Donovan Architects, LLC for the Installation of four modular classrooms at Butler Elementary School. Work is currently underway, read progress updates here.
Where will the modulars be installed?
Plans are to install the modulars on an area of blacktop behind the school.
Why do we need modular classrooms?
The district has been closely monitoring recent enrollment increases in the communities that feed into Butler Elementary School. These increases have overburdened our available classroom space within the building, and precipitated a repurposing of many spaces that were previously utilized as flexible spaces, expressive arts classrooms, and more.
While long-term planning for permanent solutions to the district's enrollment fluctuations is underway, we feel compelled to move forward with a solution that will help us here at Butler in the immediate future. As a result, the administration proposed the installation of four modular classrooms on our campus. These "modular classroom" spaces, which we will refer to as "Bear Dens," will result in greater flexibility in our space allocation within the building, allowing for specialized instruction, expressive arts, and other teaching and learning to return to more traditional environments within the building.
Who will be housed in the modulars?
The Bear Dens will house four classrooms, two first grades and two third grades. Positioning these classes in close proximity to the other grade-level classrooms (first grade in the primary wing and third grade upstairs) will maximize our opportunities for grade level coordination.
How will they be secured?
The modulars will be connected directly to the building with an enclosed hallway into the extended vestibule (Bus Platform Doors). The "Bear Dens" will be equipped with sprinklers, alarms, and will otherwise be secured just as our building classrooms. Students will never be out of doors when they travel to and from the modulars.
Will the modulars be air conditioned?
Yes.
How will the modulars affect the area of blacktop available for playground space?
The Bear Desn will utilize a portion of the blacktop area - due to the scope of the project. However, we will extend the usable playground area down the access road with immediately behind the school with blacktop games and activities.
What is the long term plan for ensuring adequate classroom space at Butler?
The district will conduct an enrollment study within the next few years in order to establish a long term plan for our elementary buildings district-wide.
