Middle School Music
Middle School students may choose to receive music instruction for a fifty minute period (every other day, all year long) as a member of a music performing group. Seventh and eighth grade students may choose from Band, Orchestra or Chorus. These courses include several public performances throughout the school year. All students choosing not to enroll in a performing group will be enrolled in one semester of Exploratory Music, in eigth grade. Ninth grade students may choose Band, Orchestra or Chorus as electives (and may choose one or two music courses on a same-time basis.) Ninth grade students (whether enrolled in an ensemble or not), may also choose to take one semester of guitar.
Grade 7 Music
8752 Band 7Band 7 is designed for seventh graders who choose to continue their educational interests in band music and have completed an elementary program or its equivalent. Students receive experience playing in a variety of musical styles and continue their development of musical skills and techniques. Several public performances are scheduled thoughout the year.Prerequisite: Participation in the elementary school band is recommended.8753 Orchestra 7Orchestra 7 is designed for seventh graders who play violin, viola, cello or double bass. Emphasis is placed on developing string technique and experiencing a variety of new musical styles and skills. Several public performances arescheduled throughout the year.Prerequisite: Participation in the elementary school strings program is recommended.
Chorus 7 is designed for all seventh grade students, regardless of musical ability, who desire to develop their interest in music through singing and other activities. Development of vocal skills and technique will be taught, and students will experience singing a wide variety of musical styles, including multi-part arrangements. Students will learn how to read a musical score. Additonal experiences may include aspects of Theatre Arts and other performance experiences. Opportunities for public performance will help students to build confidence and a sense of accomplishment, both individually and collectively.
Grade 8 Music8852 Band 8Band 8 is designed for eighth graders who choose to continue their educational interests in band music. Students receive experience playing a variety of musical styles and continue their development of musical skills and techniques. Several public performances are scheduled throughout the year, including concert and marching settings.8853 Orchestra 8Orchestra 8 is designed for eighth graders who play violin, viola, cello or double bass. Emphasis is placed on developing more advanced string technique and experiencing a variety of new musical styles and skills. Several public performances are scheduled throughout the year, including winter and spring concerts.8854 Chorus 8Chorus 8 is designed for eighth graders who choose to continue their interest in choral music. Students will experience singing a variety of musical styles in multi-part arrangements. Development of vocal skills and technique will be emphasized. Opportunities for public performance will help students to build confidence and a sense of accomplishment, both individually and collectively.8751 Exploratory Music (Grade 8)One semester of Middle School Exploratory Music is required for eighth graders who choose not to enroll in Band or Orchestra or Chorus. Middle School Exploratory Music is an active, hands-on class in which students can experiment with various methods of performance including singing, playing instruments, and Theatre Arts. The interpretation of musical notation is emphasized and interdisciplinary activities are encouraged. Students will actively participate in a variety of in-class performance settings.
Grade 9 Music
8965 Band 9Band 9 is designed for ninth graders who play instruments in the woodwind, brass, and percussion families. The goal of this full-year program is to further develop musical skills by providing a wide range of musical experiences. Students will learn the techniques needed to achieve higher levels of music performance. Both concert and marching opportunities are scheduled.8966 Orchestra 9Orchestra 9 is designed for ninth graders who have a minimum of two years of study of violin, viola, cello or string bass. This requirement may be waived pending an audition. The goal of this full-year program is to further develop musical skills while providing a variety of musical experiences. Students will learn the techniques needed to achieve higher levels of performance.8967 Chorus 9Chorus 9 is designed for ninth graders who enjoy singing and choose to enroll in a full-year program. Emphasis is placed on developing comprehensive musicianship through the use of choral literature representing a variety of styles, forms, and cultures, including both sacred and secular texts. The goal is for students to perform artistically at their ability level while developing skills in vocal technique, sight-reading, basic music theory, and music history literature.
Guitar 9
This is a course designed for students who would like to learn to play guitar. Beginner to advanced students are welcome. The course will focus on a practical foundation in guitar technique. Students will learn how to play chords and melodies on the guitar in various styles using chord symbols and tablature. Additionally, students will have an opportunity to learn how to perform pop songs from various genres. Students will also learn about the structure of chord progressions and how they can be applied to songwriting. Guitars will be provided during class.
