Foundations of Engineering & Principles of Engineering
Principles of Engineering and Foundations of Engineering are stand-alone courses that allow students to explore the five systems of technology. Throughout the courses, students will experience numerous hands-on and computer driven activities. Students completing these courses will experience manufacturing, construction, communications, Energy, Power, and Transportation and bio-related technology.
9th Grade Electives
Engineering Processes (.5 credit) – Not offered at Tamanend
This course is designed as a “hands on” course that teaches the ba-sics of materials processing and production. From developing an idea to following a plan, students learn to safely use tools and power equipment to process materials to form finished products.
Engineering and Design (.5 credit)
Design and Prototyping is an elective course that focuses on the process of bringing a design concept to reality. Through actual construction and testing of prototypes, students gain an understanding of the entire design cycle. In this course, students evaluate their designs through experimentation and competition. Students design and create projects within the five areas of technology. Projects vary and may include CO2 cars, rockets, gliders, mouse traps and battery powered vehicles, bridges, robotic arms, skateboards and other structures. Students have the opportunity to select their own projects and focus designs that interest them.
Technical Drawing and Design (.5 credit)
Technical Design and Graphic Illustration is an elective course that allows students to explore basic drawing techniques, computer-aided drafting, product design and development, architectural design, exploration of graphic software and solid modeling. Students interested in engineering, architecture, computer illustration, design, construction, and technology should find this course of value. Students will work on an individual basis as they utilize freehand,mechanical, and computer-aided methods of illustration.
Communications Technology –Tamanend only (.5 credit)
This course gives students hands on experience with current communications trends and devices. Students will apply communications principles while producing effective messages. Students will create projects using video production equipment and digital cameras. Photoshop and other editing practices will be utilized to produce the final project. Students in Communication Technology will also be involved in the daily production of the school’s morning show. Students will also examine the historical impact of communication technologies on society and examine future trends and career opportunities.
