What is Social Studies?
"Social Studies is the study of individuals, communities, systems, and their interactions across time and place that prepares students for local, national, and global civic life."- National Council of the Social Studies, 2023What do we do in our Social Studies Classrooms?
Social Studies teachers in the 有料盒子 Bucks School District prepare our students for meaningful engagement in their community, nation, and world by equipping them with an understanding of individuals, our shared past, and the institutions that make up civic life.
- Students deserve real connections between their own lives and the content and skills we find in history and the social sciences.
- Active participation and cooperative learning, balanced with appropriate direct instruction, make concepts real and connect our classrooms to the broader community.
- We embrace opportunities to reinforce skills and learning students develop in other disciplines. An understanding of History and the Social Studies allows students to set learning from other subjects into the appropriate context.
- Students deserve the opportunity to explore topics of interest in depth through research and benefit from occasions in which they share what they have learned with teachers, peers, family, and even the community.
- The complexity of teaching social studies requires teachers to reflect on their practice and match knowledge of the discipline with appropriate teaching and assessment strategies to match learning goals.
- We play a key role in promoting the skills and competencies identified in our district’s Portrait of a Graduate.
